Short
FICTION is happy to announce that Kevin Barry
was named earlier this week as the recipient of the
2007 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Kevins
story, Rico Spoke
features in Issue 1 of Short FICTION and is introduced
by previous Rooney Prize winner, Mike McCormack. The
Rooney Prize, established in 1976, is awarded annually
to a writer under the age of forty who has produced
a significant body of work. Previous winners include
Anne Enright, Hugo Hamilton, Colum McCann, Claire Keegan,
Mike McCormack, Nick Laird and Philip O Ceallaigh
(who is also featured in Issue 1) . Kevin was presented
with the 10,000 euro prize on 10 October 2007 at a special
reception in the Provost's house at Trinity College.
His first collection of short stories, There Are Little
Kingdoms, was first published by The
Stinging Fly Press in March 2007.

UPP
has sponsored an Arts Auction
and raised £1400 to help final year Media Arts
students publish their end of year book. Work
for the auction was donated from members of staff from
across the Faculty of Arts and artists from the local
community, students also contributed.

Miranda
Spicer has joined UPP as a publishing consultant bringing
commercial business experience and contacts to UPP.
She is publisher and managing director of Alphabet &
Image Ltd, which is an independent publishing company,
a member of the Independent Publishers Guild and of
the English Speaking Union. Miranda has worked in publishing
houses for over 20 years, including HarperCollins, Dorling
Kindersley, Element, Jarrold and David & Charles.
Her career has spanned production, editorial, commissioning,
training and senior management.

Syncapoda
will open at the Barbican Theatre with a Live Weekend
on the first week of June with performances and workshops
for schools.
The
music, composed by professional musicians Mr Chartwell
Dutiro and Mr John Matthias, with the contribution of
Mr Jean Lewis, will be available for schools to buy
from this website on 29th April 2006.

The
Russian book designer Yulia Razina has been working
with the Land/Water research group to publish their
societies book 'Surface'. The book was launched by Prof
Steven Parissien at the second annual symposium held
at the University of Plymouth.

Jessica
Clynewood and Altin Halil launched the Visual Arts Degree
Show 2005 Catalogue at the private view held on 17 June
at the Exeter campus of the University of Plymouth.

Jessica
Garcia and Laura Gill have been working with editor
Peter Howard and author Jocelyn Hemming to produce 'A
Devonshire House: The Story of Poltimore'. The forward
has been written by Joan Bakewell who also presented
the case for Poltimore on the BBC programme 'Restoration'.
The book was launched on 22 April 2005 at the Peninsula
Arts Centre. Jocelyn was on hand to sign copies of her
book and to discuss the history and people associated
with Poltimore since Tudor times.
