Cultural Memory: Reformations of the past in the present, and present in the past
The book draws together perspectives from literary studies in various European languages, cultural studies and cultural geography, as well as from cultural theory and political history, to investigate how memories of events, milieu, ways of living, and times take on particular forms specific to the conditions in which they are remembered.

Importance
This volume is the second in a series of edited books concerning recent and contemporary culture, social formation, urban change, and critical theory. This volume brings together established and new researchers from the arts, humanities and social sciences, juxtaposing empirical and theoretical material.

Culture & Agency: Contemporary culture and urban change
Culturally-led urban redevelopment has been used for two decades or more in the West. Cities such as Glasgow and Barcelona are often cited as successes, but there are other cases where investment has either failed to revive or economies or resulted in schemes which by-pass local publics and their cultures. But does cultural work have agency in changing urban conditions? How does culture interface social and economic development? Is the regeneration of communities separate from economic development? This book investigates specific cases of culture – including projects taking a critical approach to contemporary urban issues. It provides a theoretical context for this material, drawing on modern and post-modern writing, and includes descriptions of current projects by radical artists’ groups.

Importance
Culturally led urban development is frequently but sometimes uncritically discussed in various disciplines; this book creates an interface between the arts and social sciences, following an AHRC national workshop on culture and agency in 2007
