Contemporary madness in its entirety is summarised in Daniel Banulescu’s play, set in an asylum populated with 12 dangerous madmen who are divided as believers of the four major religions. This is theatre in a world governed by insanity; as Dan Stanca remarks, the play could be set anywhere – in Pitesti, in the Siberian Gulag, in a Nazi concentration camp, Maoist or Khmer Rouge extermination camp, and, even, in one of the CIA’s secret prisons... This is the principal merit and black humour of the play.
Daniel Banulescu (born 1960). He has published three volumes of poetry: Te voi iubi pina la sfîrsitul patului (I shall Love you until the End of the Bed) (1993), Balada lui Daniel Banulescu (The Ballad of Daniel Banulescu) (1997), Republica Federala Daniel Banulescu. Statul de Nord & Statul de Sud (The Federal Republic of Daniel Banulescu. The Northern State and the Southern State) (2000), Daniel, al rugaciunii (Daniel, of the Prayer) (2002); and the novels: Te pup in fund, Conducator iubit! (I Kiss your Arse, Beloved Leader!) (1994) and Cei sapte regi ai orasului Bucuresti (The Seven Kings of the City of Bucharest) (1997).
Banulescu has been awarded the Romanian Academy Prize for Literature. Together with Ernest Wichner, he was awarded the City of Munster European Poetry Prize in 2005. |
